|Escape is a fruitless proposition. We have grown inside our own sphere of influence for as long as anyone can remember. As a species we are no longer equipped either physically or mentally to withstand the rigors of the world outside our technology. Every facet of our existence is inundated by the technological constructs we have created to make life easier and more convenient. Our survival instincts have dwindled to the point of non-existence. Agriculture has artificially increased our food production. Our numbers have increased far beyond the carrying capacity of the earth. Our medical technology has whittled away at natural selection for more than a century. Disease resistance and longevity have been inculcated rather than evolved. Chemicals maintain our mass food supply yet assault our genome. Carcinogens leach from every orifice of every industry. There is no hope for independent survival. The technology we have used to raise us up has become a crutch we cannot stand without. We are no longer animals. We have become techno-organic; two parts to one whole. Our technology sustains us as we sustain our technology. We think it a symbiosis but the relationship has become parasitic. Technology devours our time and intellect in return for our continued existence. Every gain we believe technology has given us is at the same time a loss of our own functionality. In the name of entertainment we have given up thought and deductive capability. We allow others to choose what we think and consider ourselves well informed. Our minds and bodies atrophy as we delegate ever-increasing responsibility to software and hardware. Those few who still strive to increase our knowledge and wisdom cannot drag the dead weight of the rest of humanity along indefinitely. Our physical evolution has nearly ceased and our mental evolution progresses at a snail's pace. We have given ourselves over to this new evolution of steel and circuits. We have stood on the shoulders of giants for so long that if we fall we will never get our head above water. Our footing grows more perilous with each passing day as we greedily ingest the finite resources of our planet. Critical mass looms on the horizon. Our time draws near.
||As humans, we are products or both our genetics, and the worldview we have
internalized. As our technology defines a great portion of the world around us,
so are we defined by our technology. It is common knowledge that we govern
technology, spawning inventions and innovations as need arises and ingenuity
allows. However, the extent to which technology governs us becomes lost in
the perceived normalcy of day-to-day life.
Ryan Tanay’s artwork brings the technological side of the
human/technological entity to the forefront. Through abstraction and
clarification, our technology takes on different forms. Subtly changed from its
usual guise, the ubiquitous and invisible becomes the point of focus. Technology
is shown for the omnipotent force it is, not merely a device or idea to be
controlled. As our technology is used to manipulate and refine more and more
of the world around us, it more and more defines who we are, both as humans
and as individuals.
With a natural affinity for sculpture combined with extensive study in
the digital arts and photography, Ryan provides a single viewpoint extended to
embrace diverse media and visual expressions. From the concise descriptive
graphic quality of the Propaganda series, to his highly interpretive works of
sculpture, the influence of technology is the underlying impetus. Each media
provides its own unique flavor and perspective on this multifaceted subject.
